Coroners are busy but fewer PFDs are being written
The latest coronial statistics showcase disappointing trends
The Ministry of Justice recently published data on death investigations in England and Wales for 2022. The data shows that coronial investigations are returning to pre-covid levels, with 36,273 inquests opened in 2022 - the highest number since 1995. But the number of coroners’ Prevention of Future Deaths reports (PFDs) being written remains low.
